Why not to use /reload

Can I use /reload after changing plugins?

Avoid it: /reload often breaks plugins and leaks memory. Restart the server, or use the plugin's own reload command for config changes.

Before you start: Nothing.

Step by step

  1. For new or updated plugin jars: always restart the server from the panel.
  2. For config edits: use the plugin's command, for example /essentials reload, /lp reload is not needed (LuckPerms saves live), /sk reload <script> for Skript.
  3. If you already used /reload and things act strangely, restart the server.
  4. Schedule a nightly restart so memory stays clean.
  5. Plugins like PlugMan cause the same problems; avoid them on live servers.
  6. Datapack reloads (minecraft:reload) are different and safe to use.

Check it worked: Plugins behave normally after a restart.

Why it happens: Bukkit's reload unloads and reloads all plugins in a way many plugins do not support.
