Uploading large files or zip files

My upload fails or is too big, or I need to extract a zip.

Use SFTP for files over a few hundred MB; upload zips and extract them with Unarchive.

Before you start: An SFTP program (FileZilla or WinSCP) for big uploads.

Step by step

  1. For small files, open Files, go into the right folder, click Upload and pick the files.
  2. For many files, zip them on your PC first; one zip uploads much faster than thousands of small files.
  3. After the zip is uploaded, open its menu and choose Unarchive. Supported types are zip, tar and tar.gz; rar and 7z must be re-zipped first.
  4. For very big uploads, connect with SFTP (see the SFTP guide) and drag the files in; it can resume if it fails.
  5. Make sure the plan has enough free disk for the zip and the extracted files together (check Statistics).
  6. If extraction put everything in an extra folder (for example myserver/myserver/...), move the contents up to the right place.
  7. Delete the zip after extracting.

Check it worked: The files appear in the right folders.

Why it happens: Browser uploads are limited and can time out on large files or slow connections.
