Edit files in the browser, and undo a broken edit

How do I edit a config in the panel, and what if I broke it?

Click a file in Files to edit and save it; if an edit breaks something, put your saved copy back or restore the file from a backup.

Before you start: Know which file to edit; a backup is ideal before big edits.

Step by step

  1. Open Files and click the file to open it in the editor.
  2. Before a big edit, select all the text and copy it somewhere safe (or download the file) as your own undo.
  3. Make the change. In .yml files keep the indentation with spaces only and a space after each colon.
  4. Click Save, then restart the server or use the plugin's own reload command.
  5. If the console now shows an error for that file, paste your saved copy back and save again.
  6. No copy? Download your latest backup, take just that file out of it and upload it.
  7. If text looks garbled, the file is binary (like .dat or .db): do not edit it in the browser.

Check it worked: The server and plugin start without errors.

Why it happens: Config mistakes stop plugins or the server from starting.
