Stuck on loading terrain or game crashes when joining

I get stuck on "Loading terrain" or my game crashes when I join.

Usually a problem where you log in (a broken entity or chunk), a client mod, or not enough memory on your PC.

Before you start: The crash message from your game, if any.

Step by step

1. Try joining once more; the first load after a restart can be slow.
2. Remove client mods/shaders you do not need, and give Minecraft enough memory in the launcher.
3. If only one spot fails, move the player from the console: tp Name 0 100 0 (Vanilla/Paper), then rejoin.
4. If everyone freezes there, look in the server console for errors about an entity or block at those coordinates.
5. Restore a backup of the world if an area is corrupted.
6. For a crash, open your game's crash report (.minecraft/crash-reports) and look for a mod name, then remove or update that mod.

Check it worked: You load into the world normally.

Why it happens: The client loads everything around your position; one bad thing there can freeze or crash it.
