Failed to verify username or invalid session

I get "Failed to verify username" or "Invalid session".

Your game's login session with Microsoft is stale; restart the launcher and sign in again.

Before you start: The official Minecraft Launcher and your Microsoft account.

Step by step

1. Close Minecraft completely and the launcher.
2. Open the launcher, sign out and sign back in with your Microsoft account.
3. Start the game again and join.
4. If many players get it at once, Mojang's login service may be down; wait and try later.
5. Check your internet time and date are correct on your PC; a wrong clock can break the login check.
6. Do not turn online-mode off to fix this: that lets anyone join as any name, including yours.

Check it worked: You join without the error.

Why it happens: The server checks every player with Mojang/Microsoft when online-mode is on.
