Disconnected during play: io.netty, connection reset or timed out

Players randomly get "Internal exception: io.netty…" or "Connection reset".

The connection dropped: usually the player's network, or the server freezing long enough to time out players.

Before you start: Know whether it hits one player or everyone.

Step by step

  1. If only one player is affected, ask them to use a cable or better Wi-Fi, close downloads and turn off VPNs.
  2. If everyone is kicked at once, check the console at that time for a crash, "Can't keep up" or a watchdog message.
  3. Check TPS with /tps (Paper); if it drops, follow the lag guides.
  4. Check Statistics for memory at 100% or a restart at that time.
  5. Update ViaVersion, Geyser and proxy plugins, which often cause netty errors when outdated.
  6. If kicks happen at the same time every day, check Schedules for a restart or backup at that time.

Check it worked: Players stay connected for long sessions.

Why it happens: Unstable Wi-Fi, packet loss, or server lag spikes/crashes.

If everyone disconnects at random with a healthy server, contact support with the times it happened.
