How much RAM do I need?

For a small group of friends on Paper, 4 to 6 GB is plenty; busy public servers and modpacks need 8 to 16 GB or more.

Before you start: A rough idea of how many players will be online at once and whether you will use mods.

Step by step

  1. Vanilla or Paper with 1 to 10 players and a few plugins: 4 GB.
  2. Paper/Purpur with 10 to 30 players or 20+ plugins: 6 to 8 GB.
  3. Light modpacks (under about 100 mods, Fabric): 6 to 8 GB. Big Forge/NeoForge packs (200+ mods): 10 to 16 GB; the pack page often says its own minimum.
  4. Public servers with 50+ players: 12 GB or more, on Paper or Purpur, with view-distance around 8.
  5. Every size gets the same features. CPU and disk grow with RAM (for example 8 GB = 600% CPU and 40 GB of disk).
  6. Start smaller if unsure: upgrading later keeps the world and plugins, and you only pay the difference for the rest of the period.

Check it worked: Statistics shows memory under about 85% at your busiest time, and TPS stays at 20.

Why it happens: Memory is used by players, loaded chunks, plugins and especially mods.
