Use the VPS firewall without locking yourself out

How do I open or close ports on my VPS?

On the VPS page, add inbound rules under Firewall and click Save firewall. With the firewall on, only listed traffic gets in, so always keep a rule for SSH (TCP 22).

Before you start: Your VPS page in the client area.

Step by step

  1. Open Manage VPS and scroll to Firewall.
  2. Click Add rule. The first rule suggested is TCP port 22 for SSH: keep it, or limit it to your own address by typing your IP as the source, for example 203.0.113.7/32.
  3. Add a rule for each service you run: protocol (TCP or UDP), a port (443) or a range (8000-8100), and optionally the source ranges allowed. Leaving the source empty means anywhere.
  4. Add an ICMP rule if you want the machine to answer ping.
  5. Click Save firewall. The rules apply within a few seconds; nothing on the machine restarts.
  6. If you lock yourself out, remove or fix the rule here: the firewall is changed from the client area, not from inside the VPS.

Check it worked: The Firewall card shows "on" and the service you opened is reachable while others are not.

Why it happens: The firewall sits in front of the machine. With it off everything is allowed in; with it on, anything not listed is dropped.
