Reinstall, snapshot or upgrade a VPS
How do I reinstall my VPS, take a snapshot, or move to a bigger plan?
All three are on the VPS page. A snapshot copies the disk; reinstalling erases it and installs a fresh operating system; an upgrade moves to a bigger plan and restarts the machine once.
Before you start: Your VPS page. For an upgrade, a card for the prorated difference.
Step by step
- Snapshot: under Snapshot, type an optional description and click Take snapshot. Each VPS keeps one; delete it to take another. Shut the VPS down first for the most reliable copy.
- Reinstall: under Reinstall, choose the operating system and click Reinstall. Everything on the disk is erased. Type the service ID to confirm.
- After a reinstall, a new root password waits under Connect to be read once. Your IP addresses stay the same.
- Upgrade: under Upgrade, click Upgrade on a bigger plan. You see what is due now for the days left in this period and the new renewal price, then pay on Stripe.
- Once paid, the VPS is switched off, resized and started again by itself, usually within a couple of minutes. The page shows the progress.
- A VPS cannot move to a smaller plan, because its disk cannot shrink. To downsize, order a smaller VPS, move your data and cancel the larger one.
Check it worked: The snapshot is listed, the reinstalled system answers on SSH, or the VPS page shows the new plan.
Why it happens: Reinstalling and upgrading cannot be undone, so each asks you to confirm.
If an upgrade you paid for still shows as in progress after 30 minutes, contact support with your service ID: staff are alerted automatically, and you are not charged twice.
