Redstone and hopper lag

Redstone contraptions or hoppers are lagging the server.

Large clocks and many hoppers are expensive; slow them down, limit them, or use Paper's optimisations.

Before you start: Paper or Purpur, and the coordinates of the builds (spark or a lag plugin shows them).

Step by step

  1. Find the heavy builds with spark or by checking chunks near players when lag hits.
  2. Replace fast clocks with slower ones, or ones that turn off when not needed.
  3. Reduce hopper chains; use water streams or composters/droppers where possible.
  4. In Paper's world config, hopper optimisations such as cooldowns reduce the cost.
  5. Consider a plugin that limits redstone per chunk on public servers.
  6. Ask builders to add a lever to switch big farms and clocks off when nobody is using them.

Check it worked: TPS stays at 20 while the builds run.

Why it happens: Redstone clocks update every tick, and hoppers check for items constantly.
